A phobia is the fear of an object or thing which poses no specific danger.  The person in the grip of the phobia is aware that the danger is not real.  Phobias aren't just extreme fears; they are irrational fears. You may be able to ski the world's tallest mountains with ease but feel panic going above the 5th floor of an office building.

A phobia is an external symbolic representation of an internal anxiety.

Phobias - Symbolic

Although at first glance some Phobias seem to serve a sensible purpose (fear of fire, drowning, falling) others appear to make little sense at all.  Until you look deeper and then it can be seen that all Phobia serve a purpose.

A phobia is an external symbolic representation of an internal anxiety.

The most obvious example is the fear of lifts: how many people do you know who have been trapped in a lift.  Or have been in a lift when it has gone out of control and crashed.  None?  So where does this common fear of lifts come from.  The fact is they (mostly) don't have a fear of lifts (or dying, or crashing, or being trapped in a small and confined place), they have a fear of being out of control - which their brain symbolises and then projects onto the lift.

In therapy, we can look for and find  the originating cause, (this will be a conflict that is known only to the unconscious mind, not the conscious mind).   Once we find the root cause of the Phobia and release the emotions that are attached to it -  the phobia disappears.

Can I cure my own Phobia?
Self help books can sometimes help, although more often what they are actually doing is causing you to think about the phobia which is likely to increase your anxiety.  The best way to 'cure' a phobia is to talk to a first rate therapist.  As already stated, the object of the phobia is rarely the root cause of the anxiety.

Is there more than one way of curing a phobia?
There has been some success with desensitization of the phobia, which basically means being exposed to the object of the phobia and then talking through feelings until the person can feel a certain amount of control when next exposed.  This seems logical, if it is possible for you to be exposed to the phobia.  Like a phobia about lifts.  If you have a phobia about elephants however, we have a problem.  However, I find that taking an  Analytical approach using Hypnotherapy we can find the root cause of the anxiety , and when we do, the phobia disappears - because there is nothing driving it anymore.

Why do you think Hypno-analysis will 'cure' the phobia.
Most phobias are formed in childhood.  (although they might not appear until adulthood)  The only way to get rid of the phobia completely is to access the emotions bound up with the anxiety and release them. We do this using Free Association (FA)

This may sound easy, but most of the time, the bottled up emotions are completely hidden away in the  depths of the persons subconscious mind. (some people call this repression, what that means is that the sufferer has no conscious awareness of the emotions or experiences that are bottled up).

Through the process of hypno-analysis a strong bond of trust and rapport is built between the analyst and the client, which enables the client to share experiences that come to mind.   This typically takes about eight sessions, at weekly intervals, we slowly link thoughts and experiences back through time (by talking about them) until we come to the bottled up emotions. When we get to these emotions, we talk them through until they are resolved.

Once the fear, that in childhood seemed paralysing is viewed from the eyes of the child turned adult.  The fear can easily be resolved
